Overview
PDF Accessibility Checker is a free, privacy-first pre-check for people who need to understand whether a PDF contains machine-verifiable accessibility signals before they begin a full manual audit. It runs in the browser and processes one unlocked PDF at a time, up to 20 MB. The PDF file, file name, document text, hash, local path, title, author metadata, and issue evidence are not uploaded to the service.
What it checks
The tool uses PDF.js in the browser to inspect technical signals such as whether a document title and primary language are present, whether the PDF is tagged, whether recognizable document structure exists, whether pages appear to be image-only, and whether links and form-field signals can be detected. Results are presented as understandable findings with status and next-step guidance instead of a single compliance score.
What still needs manual review
Automated checks cannot determine whether reading order is meaningful, whether alternative text is accurate and useful, whether complex tables are correctly associated, whether color contrast is sufficient in every context, or whether the document works well with real assistive technology. Scanned or image-only PDFs may need OCR before their content can be meaningfully evaluated. A passing automated result does not prove conformance with WCAG, PDF/UA, Section 508, or any legal requirement.
Typical use cases
Accessibility specialists can use the checker for an initial triage before opening a document in Adobe Acrobat or another professional tool. Document authors, educators, government content teams, web teams, and quality-assurance staff can use it to identify obvious structural gaps and decide what to review next. Developers can also use the versioned JSON report generated in the browser as a repeatable record of the pre-check.
How it works
Choose an unlocked PDF in the public tool page, start the check, and review the findings. Processing remains in the browser. The interface explains which findings are automated signals, which require manual verification, and which are outside the tool's scope. Users can download a versioned JSON report from the browser. The current remediation feature is deliberately narrow: it can create a new copy with document title or primary-language metadata changed, then re-check that copy with PDF.js. It does not claim to repair a document's full tag tree or accessibility.
Privacy and analytics
The application does not provide a PDF upload endpoint. Analytics are limited to anonymous product-state events and broad size, duration, or error buckets; they do not include PDF names, content, extracted text, hashes, local paths, document evidence, or user identity. Support is available at [email protected] for problems with the tool, without asking users to send sensitive documents.
Pricing
The currently available browser-based pre-check is free. There is no active checkout, subscription, account system, batch-processing plan, or paid compliance service. PDF Accessibility Checker is a pre-checking aid, not a certification body, legal adviser, or replacement for a qualified manual accessibility audit.
